How To Help Your Child Succeed At Homeschooling

Fast Ways To An ‘A’ in Virtual Learning

1.          Your child may get frustrated and you might too. That’s normal. The first thing to do is acknowledge that when you’re doing school at home, there may be occasions you feel a little frustrated, unsure, or overwhelmed at an assignment.

2.          Take it slow. Promise your child you’ll take it slow. This takes some of the pressure off.

3.          Break it down into baby steps. Tiny baby steps if necessary. “First we’re going to read the homeschool English assignment.” Even if you have to readjust the beginning of the assignment, or ask the teacher for clarification.

4.          Celebrate each small win. A compliment will make your child bloom and shine and want to do more. Compliments are better than bribes.

5.           Each day is a chance to explore new wonders. Treat it that way. It’s easy to treat homework as a chore. Flip it around and look at it as an opportunity. Not “I have to do schoolwork” but “I get to do learning play.”

6.          Make it seem novel seek out novelty and challenges. The best way to motivate your child (and yourself) is to frame each task as a fun and novel change.

7.          Make a game out of it. Set a timer. See if they can do it within a certain time limit.

8.          Take frequent breaks.

9.          Get lots of physical activity. Kids aren’t meant to sit all day. If you can incorporate exercise into the homeschool assignment, so much the better.
